John Henry Duncan Jr Cemetery in Carroll Co, VA

The Duncan Cemetery is at the end of a one-mile hike that follows an old road as it spirals up to the top of a mountain ridge along Deepwater Creek in eastern Carroll Co, VA. John Henry Duncan Jr (1836-1902) was my great great great grandfather, and his Civil War headstone is the oldest in this small family cemetery. Back in 1999, his 97-year-old granddaughter told me that he wanted to be buried on the top of the mountain under the apple tree. And so he was. In the photo, he is sitting with his wife Millie.
