Hike on Saturday, March 1...

I’m leading a hike with the Friends of Stone Mountain to explore the area where Richard Sidden lived along Garden Creek within Stone Mountain State Park. He was born in 1828, served in the Civil War, and was married twice. He even spent time in the Wilkes County jail on at least two occasions! He was a true mountain man who lived most of his adult life at Stone Mountain. We’ll hike to his homesite, visit his family cemetery, and check out other interesting landmarks along the way. This will be a challenging, strenuous, two-hour hike that is almost entirely off-trail, potentially with creek crossings.  The hike begins at 10am at Garden Creek Church.

New article...

I posted a new article on the role of Wilkes County district captains.  They oversaw the census, coordinated tax collection, and presided over the muster of the district militia.  Joseph Gregory missed his muster in 1808, and he faced a court martial.

Outdoor History Adventures at the Wilkes Heritage Museum...

While working at the museum, I’ve helped to develop two new outdoor activites that can be adapted for school groups, scouts, families, and adults.  Not only do these programs provide insight into our local history, but they involve varying degrees of math, science, art, and teamwork within a fun setting that is designed so that everyone can contribute.

See the museum’s brochure and contact the museum to schedule an event for your group!

Email List...

Do you know someone else who would like to get this monthly (or so) newsletter?  If they send me an email, I’ll add them to the list!
