New this month is a short article and flyers for two upcoming genealogy events.

Article:  Finley’s Iron Fence

This is a very short article about the fence around the Finley family graves at the Old Wilkesboro Cemetery.  I discovered a deed where the sons of Martha Lenoir Gordon Finley agreed to install an iron railing in 1898.  It’s always interesting when the places described in old documents can be seen today, so I walked over to the cemetery and took some pictures of this 127-year-old fence.

Rockingham County Genealogy Swap Meet

On September 27, I am giving a workshop for the Genealogical Society of Rockingham and Stokes Counties in Mayodan, NC.  The workshop is called “Interpreting and Mapping Old Deeds”.  I’ll be talking about what land grants and deeds are, where to find the actual records, how to interpret them, and how to go about mapping them.  We’ll look at lots of examples!  The event is from 9am to 3pm, and my workshop is at 10am.

Wilkes Genealogy & History Fair

The Wilkes Genealogical Society has announced a genealogy fair on Saturday, October 11 from 10am to 3pm.  It will be held at the Wilkes County Public Library, and the event is free and open to the public.  I’ll be there with books and some of my Wilkes County research.  The Wilkes Heritage Museum also plans to have a table.
