A film crew
recently visited the Robert Cleveland Log Home at the Wilkes Heritage Museum
and interviewed me and others about the historical significance of the cabin
and the Cleveland family. I really
appreciate having the opportunity to participate in this project and share
information about this pioneer Revolutionary family. The
4-minute segment aired last week on NC Weekend on PBS NC, and the video is
online.
Online
for 30 Years
April 2025
marks 30 years that I have had a website hosting my genealogy research. I first created a few files for the World
Wide Web while at NC State University in 1995.
Years later, I acquired my own domain, and my website has continued to
grow ever since. I wrote a short article about the
history of my website.
Wilkes
Land Grants – April 2025 Update
I updated my
Wilkes County Land Grants page with an updated table and map. This was a
week-long process that involved uploading 2.3 GB worth of data to the server. A
new feature is that both the table and map now show land grants that I have
placed that were issued by surrounding counties. Previously, these were in a
separate database, and they were not listed on my site. I have now mapped 52% of the land grants that
were issued in Wilkes County. Most of the remaining 48% are not within the
present-day county boundaries. I wrote an article about
this latest update. Or, you can jump
right to the land grants page.
NC
Trail Days in Elkin
Elkin and Jonesville’s NC
Trail Days is being held from June 5-8 this year with a large variety of
hiking, river excursions, exhibitors, and music. There will be several
guided hikes in the area, and I am leading two history hikes at Stone Mountain,
both at 9am. Registration
for all events is now open!
Outdoor
History Adventures at the Wilkes Heritage Museum
While working
at the museum in Wilkesboro, I’ve helped to develop two new outdoor activites
that can be adapted for school groups, scouts, families, and adults. Not
only do these programs provide insight into our local history, but they involve
varying degrees of math, science, art, and teamwork within a fun setting that
is designed so that everyone can contribute.
See the museum’s brochure, and contact the museum to schedule an
event for your group!
