He joined Liberty Knob Baptist Church in September 1885. He was ordained deacon in August 1893, licensed to the ministry in July 1909, ordained to the ministry on 11/20/1909, and elected clerk of the Primitive Baptist Association on 10/20/1916 which he served until his death.
He was educated in Wilkes Co, including Fairview College in Traphill. He taught school in Alleghany and Wilkes for 50 terms, was engaged in the mercantile business at Cherry Lane and at Miles for several years, and was Justice of the Peace for about 40 years.
He was taken to the hospital on August 31, but he did not recover. He was buried at Woodruff cemetery.

He was buried in a family graveyard on "an elevated peak of the Blue Ridge Mountain over-looking the home of his birth."
