1798 Wilkes County, NC, Tax List
Unlike other tax lists, this list reports the landowners, their individual tracts of land, the size of dwelling houses, cabins, kitchens, mills, and other structures. In 1798, Wilkes County included Alleghany, Ashe, and parts of Watauga and Caldwell County. I transcribed the old records, alphabetized the entries, and added several short stories about how these papers tell us more about the families who lived here.
